Professional Dog Trainer Offers Free Dog Obedience Classes

To Low Income Households that Adopt Dogs from Local Shelter

Northeast Los Angeles, December 2005 – Adopting the philosophy that one good turn deserves another, professional pet dog trainer Lezle Stein is now making it easier and more affordable for lower-income families in Northeast Los Angeles to adopt dogs from the local city shelter by providing free dog training classes for their new adopted pets.

Stein, owner of Handle With Care Dog Training and also Director Of Animal Welfare for the Northeast’s Arroyo Seco Neighborhood Council will provide basic obedience training classes at no cost to these new pet owners, at one of several Northeast area locations as part of her regularly scheduled groups sessions.

Northeast residents who have an annual household income of $40,000 or less, and who adopt a dog from the North Central Animal Shelter in Lincoln Heights (3201 Lacy Street, Los Angeles 90031 - http://www.ci.la.ca.us/ani/NCShelter.htm) will be eligible for the free classes.

“Rescued dogs can come with behavior issues -- often related to how they found their way to a shelter in the first place,” explained Stein. “Handle With Care’s classes deal with the normal sort of dog training areas, but also provide detailed assistance with bigger problem issues like nipping, jumping, aggression, bolting and separation anxiety – to name just a few.”

“At the same time, dogs rescued from our city’s overcrowded shelters can become some of the most loyal and faithful companions and family members,” Stein added.

Currently, the price of taking a dog home from city shelters can easily add up to $100 or more.  If obedience classes are also needed to make the adopted pet fit well with the family, home, or neighborhood -- those added costs might price such adoptions out of a lower-income family’s budget or cause the family to return the dog back to the shelter.

The Handle With Care training -- valued at $125 -- includes six one-hour group  training sessions limited to a maximum of 10 dogs.  Stein works with each pet owner and their new animal companion on issues specific to their needs and those of the dog’s new adopted home in the class..

A Northeast L.A. resident and active member of the Friends of Hermon Dog Park (a support group for the city’s newest off-leash dog exercise facility – www.HermonDogPark.com), Stein regularly holds classes in several Northeast communities, including Eagle Rock and Glassell Park.

In addition to group dog training classes, Handle With Care also offers private instruction, new puppy consultation, and adoption consultation – to help potential dog owners select the best match for their lifestyle and home situations – before bringing a new pet home.
