ATWATER VILLAGE DAWS REPORT  JUNE 2006

Hello George and Charlotte:

Is it hot enough for you??    I'm about to melt away....

June was busier than usual  for us.  We've had tons of kittens come to us for fostering.  Two litters of kittens were extremely ill and Bea and JeanMarie struggled valiantly to save their lives.  A few survived but it was heart breaking.  We also took in 6 feral kittens and are trying to tame them.  That's been an education!  Can you say:  elbow length asbestos gloves???  (they would have come in handy)  Well, they don't call it "Catwater Village" for nuthin' !

We're busy now getting ready for our next adoption event on July 2nd.  There will be LOTS of dogs and cats there and we're hoping for a great turn out.

A day by day accounting of our activity follows below.

Subject: My DAW report

1. Your Name:  Adele Langdon

2. I am the DAW for: Westwood

3. During the month of June, 2006, I did the following:  Worked with the barking dogs issue in my neighborhood in Westwood.  Animals left outside for hours on end.  Helped my neighbor get a trainer to deal with her rescue dog, found one lost kitty a home. Talked to local elementary school about a class on pet care for children. Attended  monthly DAW meeting, helped with getting Levine there.  As always I am writing letters for animal issues

4. Did I attend a Neighborhood Council Meeting or City Council Meeting? Any comments on this: Yes
I attended the Bel Air neighborhood council meeting became DAW for Bel Air spoke at the meeting.  They were very interested passed out animal safety flyers to everyone.  I am working on putting pdf files that can be downloaded for all the council members pertaining to various issues on my website, such as emergency  evacuation plans for there animals, what’s happening in the neighborhood, importance on spay and neutering, support for different bills that are out etc.

5. Is there a special project I'm working on?  All of the above

6. Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do?  Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do differently? Just always to be mindful of how we go about getting things done and not to appear too crazy.  Because we are all so passionate about the animals it can appear a bit wacko at times and it doesn’t serve our purpose.

7. What do I like most about the DAWS? I like that we are all coming together for a common cause, that we are not alone in our efforts, and we can get so much more done together.

8. What do I like least about the DAWS? I would like to see a standard for the DAW program. Although it is a volunteer position I would like to see an outline of some sort of what would be expected. I like the report system.  In other words if you are not doing anything at all, months on end, let someone else take over.

Hello, Fellow DAWS:

It's that time again, when we invite you to tell us know what you've been up to in June. Again, it doesn't have to be a long drawn out explanation. A questionaire is below for your convenience.

Just
fill it out and return. We want to hear about your successes as well as your difficulties.  This shouldn't take anyone more than 15 minutes. Probably less. You can email these reports back to me.
Here goes:

1. Your Name: Diana Lannes

2. I am the DAW for: Glassell Park

3. During the month of June, 2006, I did the following: I have been working on my presentation to my NC regarding the 'animal education booth' I plan to have at the GP Rec Center Starting this Sept. My NC meeting is tonight. They may even want to include a dog park there!

4. Did I attend a Neighborhood Council Meeting or City Council Meeting? Any comments on this: I have been attending the meetings. They told me I need to be very specific about my budget. I am trying to be as realistic as possible. I really hope they will warm up to the my ideas!

5. Is there a special project I'm working on? See above..

6. Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do?  Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do differently? I would hope that we could be more of a team. I feel there is so much abuse and neglect, I wish we could band together to talk to people, pet shops, mechanics, etc...I see so much indifference towards animals, it kills me!

7. What do I like most about the DAWS? We all love animals!

8. What do I like least about the DAWS? In- fighting.

4. Did I attend a Neighborhood Council Meeting or City Council Meeting? Any comments on this: Yes, I always attend my own council meetings as well as some committee meetings. I also attended NC meetings for West Hills NC & Lake Balboa NC. Also attended Valley Alliance meeting and LANC Congress meeting.

5. Is there a special project I'm working on? Mainly working to get every NC to appoint a DAW. And working to make sure the Governor puts a state animal commission in place.

6. Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do?  Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do differently? I don't want to see fighting anymore, personal attacks. I want each of us to think more in political terms - we should be attending City Council and NC meetings, speaking out on issues more, etc. We should be asking our councils to get more involved with animal issues. We should try to volunteer once or twice a year at adoption events.

7. What do I like most about the DAWS? A group of people who care about nonhumans.

8. What do I like least about the DAWS? The personal attacks and baseless complaints that sometimes get reported to me.

Your Name:  MISSY WOODWARD

2. I am the DAW for: Reseda

3. During the month of June, 2006, I did the following: Taped DAW meeting with Jeff Fleiss – Lloyd Levine’s presentation.  Worked on rescue of kitten in Reseda and hooking up with individual rescuers in the area.  I rescued a dying 6 week old kitten  here, found the source of all ferals and now trying to organize trapping – see #5.

4. Did I attend a Neighborhood Council Meeting or City Council Meeting? Any comments on this:  Yes, made comments about ferals and about volunteering for LAAS – got one response from a man that wants to help with ferals.

5. Is there a special project I'm working on?  Seeking help to do feral trapping in Reseda.

6. Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do?  Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do differently?

Help create format for individuals within a community that are into humane rescue efforts on how to do so...OR...give them the resource websites to do so.  I have found some and will forward to others so they can learn how to rescue themselves. Also need to teach them how to get involved politically.

7. What do I like most about the DAWS?  The beginning efforts and enthusiasm of a group that wants to make political change but still has aspect of rescue to it.

8. What do I like least about the DAWS?  Infighting and fracturing due to no system of picking members.

Thank You!

JEANETTE ANDREAS NORTH HILLS DAW JUNE REPORT

Hi. I did not forget. I just turned on the computer to sent it along & picked up your message.

I will try to be more on time next month.

Here goes:

My name is Jeanette Andreas. I am a member of the North Hills -West Neighborhood Council and a member of the DAW program.

I was formerly employed at the VA Medical Center until I took an early retirement after 21 years of service.

I have been feeding feral cats for the past 25 years or more. Since working at the VAMC.

I feed the feral cats every day, seven days a week.
Which includes feeding, changing their water and cleaning their dishes.

I feed and care for approx. 80 to 90 cats at my former place of employment and 15 at an area near Busch Gardens.

I have a Veterinarian who spays and neuter's my cat's. He alo provides treatment for them if they need medical attention.

Before my retirement I paid for all this myself until I later heard about for Maddy Foundation. I received some assistance from the foundation which did not last very long because of reasons we all know. When I retired I had some pretty high charge card bills. Before I heard abount the Maddy Foundation I had a very difficult time finding a Vet would treat feral cats. I was even turned down by the Humane Society and other's I will not mention. Because they are feral cats.

When I retired I had some high credit card bill's to pay off. The vet bill's and food were putting me in the hole.

The same Vet has been caring for the feral cats for many years now. Many time he has treated my cat's at very reaonable cost. Or allowed me to do f/u care myelf at home.

When I spay and neuter my cat's I use Have-a Heart traps. I am now able to obtain City Vouchers when they are available. (now that I am retired I can't affford the charge card)

My day begins around 5:30am. I feed my own cats. And the stay rabbit which I adopted when a neighbor found it in her front yard. I intend to keep it until I find it a loving home.

Then I go out and feed the feral cats and their friend's and their friend's who also stop by for a bite to eat. I feed them in the parking lot of a restaurant which has been closed for a number of years and located in the area of Busch Gardens. Only 2 of the adult cat's have not been spayed or neutered and a young one who is not old enough.
I have adopted one of the cat's. He does not apprear to be a feral. He is extremely friendly. He has been neutered. I was going to take him for a ride and he got in my car. So, he now has a loving home with his "friend's'. His name is Garfield and he is very affectionate. (i have to stop doing this) I am seting up an appt. this coming week to have an ID chip placed in case he get;s out and can't find his way home again. .

Later in the day (about dinner time) I load up the car with water and cat food and go to my other area where I feed as many as 80 + cats. Most of them have been spayed or neutered. I made about 19 or 20 stops. Each group of feral cats has their own territory and eating area.

They all know my car. When I come on the grounds I stop at each area and whistle and they of them come running. Sometimes they recognize my car and follow me to the area or down the road. There are a couple who allow me to pick them up and put them in my car and let me take them for a ride to their area. They either sit on the dash or stand on thier hind legs and look out the window on the passenger side. I make 18 regluar stops every night on the grounds. And sometimes a cat will wait for me at one of the corners and I will stop and drop off food.
I keep the food and water dishes clean. On the weekend I clean all the dishes.
I feed the feral cat's 7 days a week. I always keep a bottle of Amoxi at home in the refrig. in case one of the ca's has  cold. I goal is to eventually provide shelter's set up in various area's of the rounds for the cat's.  I have been told that these have been living on the grounds since 1956.

Besides feeding feral cat's I also feed the oppossum's who live in the same area and who come out as soon a it gets dark. There are also raccoon's. They eat cat food. I have attempted other thing's such as vege's or fruit or dried bread. They will only eat the cat food.

When I return home I clean and refill a large water bowl anf a extra large water pan. The I fill 2 large bowl of cat food.
I also feed  5 or more oppossum's, 6 large raccoons and 2 stray cats who eat in my backyard every night.

The lage water pan if used by the raccooon's. After they eat they get into the water and wash. (I think they roll in the dirt first)  Some nights I get up & watch them out of the window from the back patio. I have the flashlight right on them & they don't pay any attention.
Also, I almost forgot to include the squirrel's. I feed them in my backyard in the morning's. I buy unsalted peanut's in the shell /sunflower seed's and sometimes crackers or dried bread.

Well, George I think I have already said too much. But it's okay with me if you want to edit this.  I guess I never know when to stop.

Use what ever you want.

See you at the next meeting. Let me know if you haveany questions.

Jeanette

Hi George:

This is the first chance that I have had to read  your E-Mail. In answer to your question. I am a member of the North Hills-West  Neighborhood Council. Our former Vice President informed me of the DAW program.  Our meeting's are held at the VA Rec. Hall. I retired from the VA after 21  years. I held an Administative position at the time of my retirement. I took an  early retirement because my Mother was in a transitional Living Ctr. back in  Erie, Pa. I was in contact with her every Sunday. She had dementia, Macular  Degeneration, (almost totally blind) She would tell me of things going on  there  which were difficult to believe. I had an attorney back there who  took care of he financial affairs. For the first couple of years my mother  refused to come back here to live with me. I would go back there to visit her. I  kept her house for her and every time I went back there I would take he to visit  her house. Finally, she told me, Jeanette , I think I am going to die. I want to  come back to be with you. I retired from the VA and flew back east. Unannounced. What I found was unspeakable. I put her house up for sale and brought her back  here to be with me. I had to place her in a nursing home because she also had  Dementia. And she was a sundowner. (every evening she would return to  her childhood) This is a very sad and heardbreaking thing to see your mother  like this. I had her in a locked facility with 24 hr surveilance. The short time  that Mother was here with me wa her happiest. I kept every promise I made  to my mother. She is now resting at Oakwood Memorial on Lassen in  Chatsworth.
It took a loss in my retirement by leaving the VA  early but I am at pease knowing that I did all I could for my mother. i know I  did the right thing.

The reason it took me so long to get my info. to  you was because I was busy with my "little" project for the council. I entered  the City of Los Angeles Beautification Project. I  had no help. No one  else on the council wa interested. One of the member's said there's too  much involved. Beside's it's all too deep for me, I can't handle it. ( I  preferred to work along anyway) Anyway, I did it. Our council won.  My project if titled "Planters on Plummer."  Our council is goping to  beautify the northeast corner of Plummer & Haverhurst. Some years ago the  city placed planter in the area above the wash. The Parks Dept. added  plant's & trees. They all died within about a year or 2 because  the city never adjusted the sprinklers and everything died from lack of  water. Now I am involved with all the red tape. Which no one  expected.

A female Govt. Police Ofcr.had a horrible experience with the animal  shelter on Lancaster-Palmdale area where she lives. I asked her to put her  expeience in her own handwriting an I am going to submit it to either Charlotte  or Mr. Boks or both. I have known this woman for a number of years. If I can get  her permission I would like to share what she has told me with the  DAW' s at one of our future meeting. This Ofcr. is also interested in  becoming a DAW. Which would be great. She would be a great asset to our program.  She resides in the Palmdale-Lancaster- Littlerock area. I informed her that  she could also attend our council meeting's since she is employed at the VA  where we hold our council meetings.
Well, George I bet this is the last time you  will ask me a question again. Look at the long answer you received.

I will talk with you again,

Jeanette

GEORGE SHEA STUDIO CITY DAW REPORT JUNE 06

DAWS Report -- June 06

DAW Shea spent the first half of June, 2006 on the easy coast, visiting
New Yortk and then Maine.

I returned to LA on 6/14/06. Soon afterward, I attended the DAWS
meeting on June 23. That same evening, I had a long conversation with
Mimi Brown the San Diego DAW. The details of the brief and mostly sorry
history of the DAWS in San Diego has been written about extensively elsewhere.

If there was a lesson to be learned from it it was simply that the organization needs
to be far more selective and less precipitous in its appointing of future DAWS.
This was discussed at the meeting on June 23, the minutes of which are
available.

I also devoted time to helping Stephanie Lamotta find a home for her dog,
Freeway.I paid to have an advertisement placed in the LA Daily News.

As ever, I continued to work on the glue trap situation, interacting with
various associates at PETA.

LISA REVENN LAKE BALBOA W. VAN NUYS DAW REPORT

Just fill it out and return. We want to hear about your successes as well as your difficulties.  This shouldn't take anyone more than 15 minutes. Probably less. You can email these reports back to me.
Here goes:

1. Your Name:

~Lisa Reveen

2. I am the DAW for:
~Lake Balboa/West Van Nuys

3. During the month of June, 2006, I did the following:

~Attended my Council meeting.
~Tried to rescue that same dog on the 405 freeway I have been trying to rescue for two months now.
Friday I accessed the area from Sepulveda via the fire department.  I left food and water.
Yesterday, Satruday morning, animal control set a trap.  I am waiting to hear if they caught him...

~Continuing with my feral cat and wild life rescue attempts.
~Attended and worked on a fund raiser.

4. Did I attend a Neighborhood Council Meeting or City Council Meeting? Any comments on this:

~Yes I attended my meeting.

5. Is there a special project I'm working on?

Feral Cat and aiding in Wild Life Rescue... anything that needs rescuing that crosses my path.

6. Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do?  Is there anything I would like to see the DAWS do differently?

Educate every one you come in contact with.
Feel them out, you don't have to jam anything down anyones throat. Any little bit helps.  Educating on cruelty free products (and what that means), meat (the difference between factory farming and old fashioned farming), etc.
If you don't know enough or anything about them, then learn your self so that you can educate.
We are Directors of Animal Welfare.  There for I think we should be educated on as many aspects of Animal Welfare that we can, not just dogs and cats...  because people will and do come to us for advise and answers about many things, ie: "which companies do animal testing?, what is animal testing?, where does fur come from?, what do I do if I find a baby squirrel?..." etc. etc. etc.  At least they do to me.  And if I have that title, I want to be able to back it up.

Be open to learning about other areas of animal welfare:
~Go to Animal Acres and volunteer one day. Learn about the plight of factory farm animals.
~Read about and do something to help animals in other countries like Korea where they are skinned and burned alive for their meat and fur... the same fur that we find in stores right here in America...

~Look for the good in each other and don't bad-mouth fellow animal people... save it for the abusers and true "terrorists".

7. What do I like most about the DAWS?

~We are trying to help animals in each our own ways.  We are political via our Councils, etc.

8. What do I like least about the DAWS?

~We could be more political.  Run for offices, etc. as Charlotte does and is a great example.  That is where true change begins.

~We could know more about all aspects of Animal Welfare... as I wrote above.
